What are the benefits of a career in construction?

A career in construction offers numerous benefits. One of the biggest advantages is the wide variety of roles available. From project management to skilled trades like carpentry and masonry, plumbing, and electrical work, the industry provides diverse pathways. Many of these roles offer transferable skills, allowing you to shift between different areas as your career develops.

For example, an on-site construction worker may transition to a site supervisor, or someone with a background in bricklaying could grow to specialise in stonemasonry or heritage brickwork. This flexibility, along with many opportunities for on-the-job training ensures that your career can evolve and grow within the same dynamic industry.

Construction fosters a team environment, as collaboration is key. Whether on-site or in planning, you’ll often work alongside diverse teams, building strong relationships and learning from others. The camaraderie built from accomplishing shared goals makes for a positive and rewarding work culture.

No two days are the same in construction, and there is plenty of chance to travel depending on the role. The construction industry is always in demand, ensuring a steady stream of work and opportunities for growth. With the constant need for infrastructure, renovation, and development, construction workers are always needed.

The construction industry has been in the news regarding its need for more workers, particularly the increasing deficit of skilled tradespeople required to meet current demands. This need has been highlighted with the new government’s housing targets, and the recent Skills England: driving growth and widening opportunities report. The report stated that according to a Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) forecast, the construction sector will need 252,000 extra workers over the next four years to meet UK construction targets.

Working with building material manufacturers

The wider construction industry is supported by building material manufacturers. Every element that makes up a building must be designed, developed, and produced in order to result in that completed final project. From bricks to cables, this sector encapsulates a wide variety of products.

H+H has been manufacturing aircrete products in the UK for over 75 years. Its Celcon Blocks and Vertical Wall Panels are used to construct both cavity and partition walls of homes and low-rise buildings to provide a robust, thermally efficient structure.

Having factories located in Borough Green in Kent, and Pollington in Yorkshire, as well as two distribution depos, means H+H can efficiently supply blocks to merchants and housebuilders around the country. H+H aims to offer a stimulating and supportive working environment through training and performance management, giving its employees the chance to learn new skills and develop existing ones.

H+H is also a partner of Building Material Careers (BMC), which helps support people in finding the right career for them in the building materials industry.
